1. Luke/Acts. Call me a cheater, but I count this as one. I love Luke's perspective on the Gopsel story emphasising compassion, justice and fellowship (some say in Luke Jesus gets killed because of who he eats dinner with), and the continuation of those themes in the life of the infant church.
2. Isaiah. (see Erika's description above)
3. Jeremiah. A prophet who is not afraid to tell it like it is, or to cry.
4. Revelation. Hope for tomorrow, as well as instructions for dealing with Empires and other bullies today.
5. Song of Songs. For those cold winter nights.

Genesis: God, Creation, mankind, the fall, the flood, the Patriarchs, <a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%2034:22-25&amp;version=31" rel="nofollow">34:22-25</a>, the story of Joseph—Genesis has it all!

John: the Prologue, Nicodemus, the woman at the well, the seven "I am" sayings, chapters 14-17, and the account of the empty tomb in chapter 20—its uniqueness among the four Gospels makes John my favorite for some reason.

Romans: as if any good Calvinist would fail to include this among his or her favorites.

Philippians: I am amazed by the joy Paul has in this letter. An ounce of that would be nice right about now.

Not sure on the fifth one, though I may jump on the Matthew train. The Psalms are awesome, and 1 John is a lovely epistle. Can the whole New Testament be my favorite?

Matthew: The book of Matthew has been my favorite gospel since the fourth grade. That was when I started reading the Bible seriously, and Matthew is where I began. God changed me deeply, even at that young age, through that text. I was also in the Matthew class with Beaton and it only confirmed for me my deep love for this book.
2. Revelation: As Darrell Johnson once preached, this book reminds me that, no matter how much things look to the contrary, "Jesus' gonna win." As an urban minister, this book is a lifeline for me.
3. Ezekiel: the images of moving from death to life by the grace of God
4. Isaiah: how justice and worship function together
5. Deuteronomy: how to live as someone who remembers

1. Mark: Fantastic writer--challenges our view of Jesus. Short, to the point.
2. Acts: Especially Paul's journeys, giving us a taste of discipleship and mission in action
3. Psalms: God never ceases to minister to me through its poetry.
4. Exodus: What a fantastic story of God's love for his people and adopting them as his own.
5. Ephesians: Covers wide and deep
