Last night Carey and I watched the documentary, How’s Your News? The film follows a group of reporters with various physical and mental disabilities as they produce their television show on a cross-country trip. I found myself smiling uncontrollably throughout the film. Two things about the film stand out as especially remarkable. First, the film presents a joyous picture of the reporters as we get to laugh, become fascinated with the reporters’ subjects, and be surprised alongside the reporters, but the film doesn’t have a hint of cheap sentimentality. Second, though the reporters have helpers taking them across the country, we never really see them. The film is told primarily through the eyes of the reporters. They direct the camera to things and people they find interesting and they have control over their interview subjects. I recommend this film highly.
