For Christmas, my family (in-laws included) all chipped and bought me a new camera, the Nikon D40x. It’s the first SLR I’ve ever used and I feel like I’m learning to take pictures all over again—not only do I have to learn how to use the specific camera, but I’m also learning about utilizing so many more controls as I previously only used point and shoots. I am having a blast.
I’ve created a set on my Flickr site where people can look at some of the first pictures I’ve processed. You can view a slideshow of the pictures if you would like.

That’s a beautiful picture, Tyler. I’m excited for you. There are many wonderful things that you can do with an SLR. You may though catch the bug that I have and learn enough to recognize how much more you can do as you buy more things for it.
It definitely has that hobby quality of always having something more you can buy for it. What you have should be terrific and you can learn a ton on it. I will refrain from mentioning what you would benefit from next.
I learned a ton from the forums on DPReview.com.
The immediate benefit I got from an SLR was being able to catch things quickly. I could zoom instantly to what I wanted. I could catch a shot within milliseconds. Beyond this, I expect you will find the many joys of manipulating depth of field.
