Your Fresh Breath Goes on and on While You Chew It
Is it just me, or does contemporary advertising not use jingles as much anymore? Or at least jingles that bore their way into my memory so that years later they continue to vex me because I can still sing them word for word. I woke up yesterday with this jingle from commercials in the 1980’s stuck in my head and couldn’t get it out. Share my misery, please.

Listened to an NPR piece a couple of weeks ago re the tendency our brains have to get fixated on certain musical, visual and informational patterns.
They played Petula Clark’s 60’s hit ‘Downtown’ as an example of a song you can’t get out of your head. Hadn’t heard it since I was a teenager but I’ve been humming that song for the last couple of weeks. Aaargghhh!
The scientific consensus seems to mount about our struggle to be open to new things and to fresh evidence. We seem wired for advertising and fundamentalism of both the intellectual and religious varieties. Aaargghhh :^)!

I played the Big Red clip and knew every word—as did Sylvia. Sitcoms don’t use jingles anymore as well (not that sitcoms are really that popular at the moment). One exception to the no jingle rule (that I can think of) is children’s cable shows (e.g. Disney Channel and Nick). Spongebob and the Fairly Odd Parents have distinctive songs at the beginning. The Fairly Odd Parents song is a throwback to the cartoons of the sixties (e.g. Frintstone’s and Jetson’s). I know way too much about this stuff.
