“An Evangelical Manifesto: A Declaration of Evangelical Identity and Public Commitment,” is up on the interwebs. I’ve yet to read it, but really want to since the issue—faith and politics—is right up my alley. I hope to get to it and post on it soon.

I am impressed by the diversity of signatories, and I think the manifesto is fine as far as it goes. I think it easily could have missed its target, so the fact that it hit it is admirable. The flip side, though, is the question of the target it intended to hit. I think, on the one hand, that we should not expect the manifesto to do something it wasn’t meant to do. Where some people are right to criticize it, however, is with respect to what it’s target is. An example would be the criticism offered by Al Mohler: http://www.albertmohler.com/blog_read.php?id=1147. At any rate, I think that while the manifesto is fine as far as it goes, I wonder if it will be a thing Evangelicals will be referring to in five years, and I kinda doubt it.

Tyler – there was mention of this in Newsweek this week. Let me know if you want to see the write up.
