We hosted some friends as they vacationed in Southern California last weekend. We had a great time with them and found that it felt like we were on vacation too. Here are some pictures of their kids playing with the hose in our back yard. I only feel a little guilty that this happened just after the governor declared that our state is officially in a drought.

Carey and I have become members of the Arboretum of Los Angeles County for a year. Finding a place so lush with vegetation in Southern California offers a unique breather from the asphalt and power lines. I’d hate to see their water bill, however. Here are some pictures. I’ll be posting more as the year progresses I’m sure.

For Christmas, my family (in-laws included) all chipped and bought me a new camera, the Nikon D40x. It’s the first SLR I’ve ever used and I feel like I’m learning to take pictures all over again—not only do I have to learn how to use the specific camera, but I’m also learning about utilizing so many more controls as I previously only used point and shoots. I am having a blast.

I’ve created a set on my Flickr site where people can look at some of the first pictures I’ve processed. You can view a slideshow of the pictures if you would like.

Reflections on Dad, PhotographsDecember 12, 2007 8:07 am

Dad and Joshua Myrtle BeachI’ve uploaded a bunch of photographs of Dad. I didn’t take the vast majority of them, but I’ve been editing them in Photoshop Elements. The exercise of editing the photos has proven to be a helpful way of remembering Dad. It feels tangible. A lot of the pictures are old and scanned by a friend of my mom’s who graciously created a digital slideshow that we watched at the memorial service. It’s been good to look at these photos and laugh and cry.

The picture on the left of Dad and my nephew on vacation at Myrtle Beach, SC taken a couple of years ago is one of my favorites from the set.

Carey and I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago. We first went to see my family for what would have been my dad’s 65th birthday. As a family, we went to Yosemite, ate lunch at the Ahwahnee, and baked a chocolate cake. It was agreed that Dad would have designed the day himself if he were around. Carey and I then went camping and backpacking in Big Basin Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz. We came home and went to Disneyland and California Adventure to close out the vacation. It was a great week. I’ve posted some of the pictures at my Flickr page. I plan to add more as I finish editing them.
